Guided tours of the Pantheon in Rome: four formats, one room

These are not four price tiers. They answer four different questions, and the right one for you depends on which question you are actually asking.

Two things jump out of that table if you read the last column against the second.

The dearest format is not the best-rated one. Private tours cost more than three times an expert-led visit and score a hundredth of a point lower. Whatever you are buying at €218,90, it is not a better explanation.

The lowest rating belongs to the format that adds the most. Combined walks — the Pantheon plus one other place — rate 4.60, the only figure in this section below 4.7. There is a reason, and it is not that the guides are worse. It is that a two-and-a-half hour walk has more moving parts, more weather, more feet, and more chances to disappoint somebody.

It is worth knowing what to disbelieve, because several categories that exist at other Roman monuments simply do not exist here.

There is no way up. No dome climb, no gallery, no terrace, no rooftop. The dome is a single unreinforced concrete shell and there is nothing inside it to walk on. If a product implies a view from above, it is selling you a nearby rooftop bar.

There is no underground. The Pantheon has no crypt open to visitors and no excavation beneath it on the tourist circuit. The excavated Rome near here is under Piazza Navona and under the Trevi Fountain, and both are separate tickets and a separate page.

There is exactly one genuine extra, and it is sold by the state and almost nobody else: Oltre il Pantheon, forty-five minutes in the spaces of the Basilica of Neptune behind the rotunda, €10 on top of admission, groups capped at twenty-five. In the entire affiliate catalogue we found two listings that offer it.

Everything else that is sold as special access at this monument is a reserved entry time with better wording.

Because admission is fixed at €7 and licensed guides get in free, the sums here are unusually transparent. On any product in this section, the guide's time is the price minus seven euro, divided by however many of you there are.

A €54 small-group visit with ten people is roughly €470 of guiding for the group. A €219 private visit for two is €410. A €12 group visit at a busy fixed departure is €5 a head, which only works because the group is full and the route runs several times a day — and that product carries 907 reviews at 4.8, so it evidently works.

Where this arithmetic changes your decision is at party size. For four people or more, a private tour usually costs less per head than a small-group one, and it comes with a schedule that bends. For one or two, it almost never does.

The crossover sits at four. That is a useful thing to know before you assume a private guide is a luxury, and it is not written on any product page, because product pages price per booking and compare against nothing.

Piazza della Rotonda is small, crowded and shaped like a funnel, and almost every operating problem in this section's reviews is somebody standing in it looking for a guide.

Three habits fix nearly all of it. Read the meeting point the night before, not on the morning — some are not in the square at all but on Via della Minerva or by the elephant, two minutes away. Look for the sign, not the person: guides carry a board or an umbrella, and in that square nothing else is findable. And arrive fifteen minutes early, because a reserved entry time is a slot the whole group enters on, and a group cannot wait for you without losing it.

One more, specific to this monument. If your visit falls on the first Sunday of the month, admission is free and nothing is bookable, so any product promising a guaranteed entry time on that date is either being cancelled or is not telling you something. Two of the better products in this catalogue say so on their own listings. Most do not.
