Pantheon Semi-Private Tour, Read as a Piece of Engineering
The same building carries three names, and this tour takes each of them seriously. Santa Maria ad Martyres is the Christian basilica, consecrated to the martyrs. The Pantheon is the imperial statement of what Rome could put up. Under both is the temple Agrippa founded in the age of Augustus, rebuilt on Hadrian's instruction into the structure standing now. It still holds the remains of people who shaped Italian culture and politics. Semi-private means the group stays small enough that the guide can go technical where going technical is worth it. That matters here, because the Pantheon repays being read rather than admired. What looks like a heavy ring of masonry around the rotunda is doing something more interesting than sitting there, and once you have been shown where the forces travel, the wall stops looking solid. The interior is one room. An hour spent understanding how it holds itself up beats three spent listing what is in it.

Piazza della Rotonda, Roma
Pantheon
The Pantheon stands almost as it was built, which is unique among Roman monuments of this scale. What makes it strange is that the effect survives the crowd. In a room with three hundred people in it the proportions still do their work, and the sense of standing somewhere carefully arranged rather than merely old does not go away. Roman architects designed for exactly that.
