Rome Baroque: Fountains and Squares Private Walking Tour

A private walk through the centre for people arriving in Rome for the first time, ending at a table rather than at a metro station. The route takes the four set pieces: the Trevi Fountain and its coin, the restored Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo with the oldest obelisk in the city at its centre, the Pantheon, and Piazza Navona on the outline of Domitian's stadium with Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers in the middle. What a private guide adds here is order and connection. These are all Baroque set pieces except the Pantheon, and the Baroque ones were built to be seen from particular angles, at particular hours, by people arriving on particular roads. Walked in sequence with someone explaining that, the squares stop being a list and start being a scheme. The walk finishes at a local restaurant with traditional Mediterranean cooking, which after three hours on your feet is the right way to end an introduction to the city.

  1. Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is the best known of all the fountains in Rome and the one most first-time visitors put at the top of the list. Tradition says a coin thrown in brings you back to the city.

  2. Spanish Steps

The staircase links the church of Trinità dei Monti at the top, under the patronage of the king of France, with the square below. The long triangular square takes its name from the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See.

  3. Piazza del Popolo

Laid out in 1538 as a grand entrance to what was then the main northern gate of Rome, this square has been remodelled several times, most recently by Giuseppe Valadier in 1823. The obelisk at the centre is 36 metres high, brought from Egypt by Augustus, and first stood in the Circus Maximus.

  4. Pantheon

The best preserved ancient building in Rome, dedicated first to all the gods and made a Christian church in the seventh century. Inside, the dome and the oculus at its centre light the room on their own. The tombs of Raphael and of Victor Emmanuel II, first king of Italy, are here.

  5. Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona stands in the historic centre a short walk from the Pantheon, and is among the most photographed squares in Rome. Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers is at the middle of it.
