Caravaggio in Rome and the Capuchin Crypt, Ten People Maximum

Ten people at most, and a route that ends somewhere most tours will not take you. It begins at San Luigi dei Francesi with the three Caravaggios painted between 1599 and 1602, all three on the life of St Matthew, all three free to look at. From there to the Pantheon, then the Trevi Fountain and the legends attached to it, then Piazza Barberini and Bernini's Triton fountain. The last stop is the Museum and Crypt of the Capuchin Friars. The museum holds another Caravaggio. The crypt holds the remains of an estimated four thousand people, most of them friars of the order, arranged into decoration by the brothers who buried them: vertebrae set as rosettes, whole skeletons still in their habits. It is not for everyone, and this tour says so rather than pretending otherwise. A small group is what makes the crypt work. In a corridor that narrow, twenty people is a queue.
