Pantheon Guided Tour with Optional Access to Hidden Areas

Two versions of this tour, and the difference between them is real rather than cosmetic. The Classic Pantheon Tour is a guided visit inside: the largest unreinforced dome in the world, the oculus, the original marble floor, Raphael's tomb, and the engineering that has held the whole thing up for two thousand years. The Special Access option adds the part of the site almost nobody sees. Behind the rotunda lie the remains of the Basilica of Neptune, a separate ancient building that shared a wall with the Pantheon and is not on the normal visitor route. The tour goes through the archaeological remains with digital reconstructions to show what stood there, then enters the Pantheon by a dedicated back entrance rather than through the portico and the crowd. That option also includes a short Italian coffee tasting, which in this quarter is less of a gimmick than it sounds: two of the most argued-over coffee bars in Rome are within a couple of minutes of the portico.

What's included

  • Pantheon regular ticket, worth EUR 7.00 (with "Classic Option")
  • Pantheon special ticket, worth EUR 17.00 (with "Classic Option")
  • Live expert guide
  • Brief coffee tasting experience (only with "Classic Option")

  1. Piazza della Rotonda, Roma

Meet your guide at the fountain in the centre of the square, in front of the Pantheon entrance. Look for a yellow label reading TOURIKS. Arrive five minutes before the start time.

  2. Fontana del Pantheon

Meet your guide below the obelisk for an introduction to the square and the front of the Pantheon before you go in.

  3. Pantheon

Rome's best preserved ancient building, with a guide who points out what most visitors walk past and explains the engineering of a temple dedicated to all the gods. The interior has survived almost untouched, under the largest dome the ancient world built. Michelangelo admired these proportions when he first saw them, and there is a pagan logic behind them that the guide unpacks. You walk between Corinthian columns brought from Egypt and across the original marble floor. Then the later chapter: the Christian church, and the tombs of martyrs, Italian royals and Raphael. A further forty minutes through the surrounding squares and churches can be added at booking. The stops are listed below.

  4. Piazza della Minerva

An optional second forty minutes with the guide, through the squares and churches around the Pantheon, added at the time of booking. The stops are listed below. It begins in Piazza della Minerva, with the history of the square and Bernini's Elephant and Obelisk in the middle of it.

  5. Tempio di Adriano

A few cobbled streets away stand the huge columns of the Temple of Hadrian, absorbed into a later facade. Ancient and modern architecture sharing one wall.

  6. Piazza Navona

The walk ends through the back alleys in Piazza Navona, where both Bernini and Borromini left work. The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi is worth walking around all four sides of.

  7. Piazza della Rotonda, Roma
