Pantheon Small-Group Tour, 55 to 60 Minutes with an Official Guide
The same operator has been running this small-group tour for more than five years with official, native-speaking guides, and it lasts fifty-five to sixty minutes. An hour is the right amount of time for the Pantheon, and the reason is the building rather than the schedule. It is one room. There is no wing to work through and no upper floor, so a tour that runs much longer is padding out the walk between the door and the middle of the floor. What the hour covers is why the building is still here. Every other temple of imperial Rome was stripped for its marble and its metal; this one became a church, and churches got repaired. Inside, the pagan and the Christian occupy the same room without apology: niches that held gods now hold altars, and the tombs belong to a king, a queen and Raphael. Groups stay small and the meeting point is opposite the portico, so nothing about the arrangement wastes the hour it sells.

The ground here was the Campus Martius, the field of Mars, which lay outside the old walls of Rome and carried the traditions about Romulus and how the city began. What stands on it now has survived two thousand years for one reason: it became a church, and so it was looked after. Pagan and Christian meet in the same room. A king and a queen are buried here, and so is Raphael.
Pantheon
Outside first: the columns, and the round building hiding behind a rectangular front, which is the trick the architect plays on everyone approaching from the square. Then the dome, and the oculus open to the sky above ground that Roman tradition ties to the disappearance of Romulus.
