Pantheon Museum
Rome's terracotta rooftops and church domes under an intense pink and magenta sunset sky

Around the Pantheon: the quarter, honestly labelled

Two hundred and fifty-three experiences within a twenty-five minute walk of the portico. Twenty-two of them go inside the monument, and we say which.

This part of the site is not about the Pantheon. It is about the eleven or twelve streets around it, which is where you will spend the rest of the day, and it is filed under a name that says so.

That distinction sounds like pedantry and it is the whole design. Elsewhere in this market a category called Pantheon tours can contain a golf cart, a cooking class and a walk that never goes closer than the far side of Piazza Navona. Ours cannot, because everything that does not go inside the monument is here instead, under a heading that reads Nearby.

Two hundred and fifty-three experiences, in four groups: walking tours, attractions with their own tickets, evenings, and food and wine. Twenty-two of them do include Pantheon admission, and those carry a badge on the card so you can see it without opening anything.

There is a tension in putting the quarter on a site named after one monument, and it is better said out loud. The food tours here have more reviews than everything else on the site combined — one Trastevere walk carries 6,285 on its own, almost as many as all seventy-eight experiences that get you inside the Pantheon put together. The building is the reason you came. The quarter is where the evening goes.
