Visit the Market in Campo de Fiori (morning tours)

One stop on this route is Eugenio Morrone's shop. He won the gelato world championship in 2020, and the place is not on the main streets, so most people walking round Rome will never find it. That alone separates this from the other private food tours in the same three quarters. Three and a half hours, private, so the group is yours and the route can be adjusted. Campo de' Fiori, the Jewish Ghetto, Trastevere. What you eat: cacio e pepe and amatriciana, the two Roman pastas that share three ingredients and part company on the fourth. Carciofi alla giudia, the fried artichokes of the Ghetto. Pizza al taglio from a bakery that also does the bread properly. Cured meats and cheese from a family that has been selling food since 1919. Then the gelato. The walk in between: Piazza Farnese with its two fountains and the palace that is now the French embassy. The morning market at Campo de' Fiori, and the statue of Giordano Bruno, burned alive by the Inquisition in 1600 on the spot where he now stands. The Ghetto, with the synagogue, the Jewish school and the Roman ruins between them. Piazza Mattei and its Fountain of the Turtles, small enough to miss and worth stopping for. Over the oldest bridge in the city to Tiber Island, which holds a church, a convent and two hospitals, and which has live music on summer nights. It ends in Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. Meeting point: Piazza Farnese, outside the corner of the Vynique café. Wait outside, not inside. If the guide is not there five minutes before departure, call the emergency number.

  2. Piazza Farnese

The tour starts in Piazza Farnese, an unusually quiet square with two fountains and the Palazzo Farnese, now the French embassy.

  3. Trastevere

Trastevere, on the same bank as the Vatican, is the last stop. Afternoon departures end here, when the streets are at their busiest.

History, habits and the reasoning behind the recipes, told while you eat them. Among the stops, a family that has been selling food here since 1919.

  9. The kingdom of pizza al taglio and the paradise for bread…

Pizza al taglio, cut with scissors and sold by weight, from a bakery that takes its bread as seriously as its pizza.

  10. Isola Tiberina

Across the oldest bridge in the city to Tiber Island, which holds a church, a convent and two hospitals. On summer nights there is music on it.

  11. Taste your cacio e pepe and amatriciana pasta
