Four Stops by Private Car: Trevi, Navona, St Peter's, Castel

A short private night drive with four stops, which is worth stating plainly: this is not a twenty-stop circuit. Four places, properly, with a driver who knows them and no walking between neighbourhoods. The Trevi Fountain, designed by Nicola Salvi and finished by Giuseppe Pannini, the largest Baroque fountain in the city, at an hour when the water is audible. Piazza Navona, which is that shape because Domitian's stadium is underneath it. Romans came to watch the agones, the games, and the name went from Circus Agonalis through in avone and navone to Navona. St Peter's Square, immediately in front of the basilica, inside the papal enclave west of the Borgo. And Castel Sant'Angelo, which Hadrian commissioned as a tomb for himself and his family and the popes later turned into a fortress. For centuries it was the tallest building in Rome, which is easier to believe standing under the drum at night than reading it in daylight. A private vehicle covers that ground in an evening, including both banks of the river, without the walk between the Vatican and the centre.
