Fifteen people at most, morning or afternoon, and a route that alternates the obvious with the overlooked. The obvious is the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, and there is no point pretending otherwise: they are famous because they are worth the walk. The overlooked are two interiors a few streets apart. Galleria Sciarra is a covered courtyard from the 1880s, painted from floor to roof with art nouveau frescoes of women representing the domestic virtues, and there is no ticket and usually nobody in it. Sant'Ignazio, five minutes away, is a Baroque church whose dome is a flat painted canvas, because the real one was never built. Between them they say more about how Rome does illusion than any monument on the list. The walk begins at Piazza Venezia and the Imperial Forums, where the layers are visible from one spot, and takes in Trajan's Forum on the way down. A group of fifteen is small enough that the guide can be heard in a church and stop for questions in a street. It ends at Piazza Navona, near dinner.
