A private walk across the centre that keeps going after most tours have stopped, ending at the river. The route takes the squares in order: Piazza di Spagna, the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Colonna, the Pantheon, San Luigi dei Francesi, Piazza Navona, then out to the Tiber and Castel Sant'Angelo. Two of those stops are the reason to take this version rather than a shorter one. Piazza Colonna is where the ancient and the current city sit on the same square: the column of Marcus Aurelius on one side, the offices of the Italian government on the other. And the Tiber itself, which most walking tours never reach, is where the shape of Rome makes sense. The bridges, the embankments and the river traffic explain why the city grew where it did. The Pantheon is covered from outside and inside. San Luigi dei Francesi holds the Caravaggios in the Chapel of St Matthew and costs nothing to enter. Being private, the route is adjustable: it is built around what interests you rather than a fixed script. It ends in front of Castel Sant'Angelo, seen from the outside.
