Rome Walking Tour from Piazza d'Aracoeli, with Galleria Sciarra
This walk took a Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award in 2021 and was ranked among the ten best experiences in Italy, which is a claim worth checking against what the route actually does. It starts at Piazza Venezia and the imperial forums, where the same ground carries ancient Rome, Renaissance Rome and Napoleonic Rome stacked on top of each other, then Trajan's Forum and the column that records his campaigns. The Trevi Fountain comes next, lit, which is a different sculpture from the daytime one. Then two interiors most visitors never enter. Galleria Sciarra is a nineteenth-century courtyard painted floor to ceiling in art nouveau frescoes, and it is free, and it is a minute off a street a thousand people an hour walk down. Sant'Ignazio is one of the largest Baroque churches in Rome and has a dome that was never built, only painted. The Pantheon follows, and the walk ends in Piazza Navona, among the restaurants, which is deliberate: it finishes where dinner is. Arrive ten minutes early. Latecomers are not refunded.
