Mysterious Ghost Tour at Heart of Rome

This walk is built on reported sightings as much as on documents, and it is worth knowing which is which before you book. Documented: Castel Sant'Angelo was Hadrian's tomb before it was a prison and an execution site. Mastro Titta was the papal executioner and worked at the addresses on this route. Giulia Tofana sold a poison that killed slowly and undetectably, was arrested, and was executed; the figure of six hundred husbands comes from the accounts of the time and cannot be verified. Giordano Bruno was burned in Campo de' Fiori in 1600. Reported: the shadow with an axe near the executioner's house. The whispers among the Spanish tombs in Santa Maria in Monserrato. The woman seen walking the streets near the prison at night. The mask on the fountain that is said to move after dark. The figures on Ponte Sisto, attributed to people who drowned under it. The Farnese, whose deaths were often violent, and whose palace has a reputation. The walk takes both seriously, which is the honest way to run one of these: the history is real, and so is the fact that people keep seeing things. It starts at the end of the bridge in front of Castel Sant'Angelo and ends in Campo de' Fiori.

The prison where Giulia Tofana was held and executed. A woman is said to be seen in the streets nearby at night.

  7. Pause at this eerie fountain

A fountain with a grotesque mask over the basin, a warning attached to its water, and a persistent story that the mask moves once it is dark.

Across Ponte Sisto, over the Tiber. The bridge has seen a great deal, and the figures reported walking it at night are attributed to people who drowned below.
