Angels and Demons Privately: Sorting the Novel from the Record
Three and a half hours on the Illuminati path from Dan Brown's novel, with transfers from your hotel, and a guide whose stated job is to separate what is documented from what was written for the plot. The honest answer to the central question is worth having before you book. The Bavarian Illuminati were founded in 1776, more than a century after Bernini died and well after Galileo. Whatever else they were, Raphael, Bernini and Galileo were not members of a brotherhood that did not exist in their lifetimes. What is true is more interesting: Bernini worked for popes who were his patrons and his censors at once, and Galileo was tried by the Church for what he had observed. The tension the novel dramatises was real. The route covers Santa Maria della Vittoria and Bernini's Ecstasy of Saint Teresa in the Cornaro Chapel, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Ponte Sant'Angelo with its angels, and St Peter's Basilica and its square. Pick-up is from your hotel in the centre, inside the Aurelian Walls.

Santa Maria della Vittoria
Santa Maria della Vittoria is a Baroque church best known for Bernini's Ecstasy of Saint Teresa in the Cornaro Chapel, where the marble, the hidden window and the theatre boxes carved with the patron's family in them all work together. The rest of the interior is heavy with coloured marble and fresco.
Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain, the largest Baroque fountain in Rome, with the sculpture and the coin thrown over the shoulder.
Pantheon
The Pantheon, the temple of all the gods, built under Hadrian between 118 and 125 AD. Its dome was the largest anywhere until Brunelleschi finished Florence cathedral in 1436, and it remains the largest ever built in unreinforced concrete. It became a church in the 7th century, which is why it survived.
Piazza Navona
Piazza Navona, with three fountains, Bernini's Four Rivers among them, and the cafes and restaurants that keep it busy from morning until late.
Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi
The Fountain of the Four Rivers, commissioned in the mid-17th century, with four figures for the Nile, the Danube, the Ganges and the Rio de la Plata, one for each continent then known. The Nile's head is veiled, and the reason is still argued about.
St. Angelo Bridge
The Ponte Sant'Angelo, built by Hadrian in 134 AD, carries angels designed by Bernini and carved largely by his workshop, each holding an instrument of the Passion.
St. Peter's Basilica
St Peter's Basilica, built over what is held to be the tomb of Peter, with Bramante, Michelangelo and Bernini all involved across the century and a half it took.
St. Peter's Square
St Peter's Square, and the symbols worked into its paving that have been read in more than one way.
