The Four Altars of Science: The Illuminati Path in a Small Group
In the novel, four cardinals are murdered at four churches, each branded with an element, and the trail is meant to be followed in order. This walk follows it on the ground, which turns out to be a good route through Rome whatever you think of the book. It starts at Santa Maria della Vittoria, where the third cardinal is found branded with fire, and where Bernini's Ecstasy of Saint Teresa actually is. The Pantheon comes next, and this is the stop the plot depends on: Langdon goes there having misread a clue, when the church he wanted was Santa Maria del Popolo. That mistake is why the book has a second act. Then St Peter's Square, and the spot where the cardinal branded with air is found. Piazza della Repubblica. Piazza Navona, where the fourth is found in the water. And Castel Sant'Angelo, which the novel makes the Illuminati's meeting place, with the Passetto running from it to the Vatican. Every monument is seen from the outside, which is stated plainly here and is worth knowing before booking. Small group. The guide waits in front of the church.

Via Venti Settembre, 17, Roma

Santa Maria della Vittoria
The church holds Bernini's Ecstasy of Saint Teresa in the Cornaro Chapel, and has been busy with visitors since Dan Brown put it in Angels & Demons.
Castel Sant'Angelo
Work on the building started in 135 under Hadrian, who intended it as a tomb for himself and his family. The popes later made it a fortress, and it is a museum now. Seen from outside, with its history told on the spot.
Pantheon
The best preserved ancient building in Rome, and a clear case of a pagan temple kept alive by being made Christian. It stands in the old Campus Martius, on one of the lowest parts of the city, filling the south side of Piazza della Rotonda. From 1870 it became the burial place of the kings of Italy and holds Victor Emmanuel II, Umberto I and Margherita of Savoy, along with Raphael. Seen from outside.
Chiesa di Santa Maria del Popolo
Santa Maria del Popolo, a minor basilica run by the Augustinians, holds work by Raphael, Bernini, Caravaggio, Algardi, Pinturicchio, Andrea Bregno, Guillaume de Marcillat and Bramante, which for a parish church is an unusual list.
St. Peter's Basilica
St Peter's Basilica, in the papal enclave inside Rome, designed principally by Bramante, Michelangelo, Maderno and Bernini. It is the largest church in the world, though it is neither the mother church of Catholicism nor the cathedral of Rome, which are both San Giovanni in Laterano. Seen from outside.
