A guided walk that crosses the centre from one end to the other, taking the squares in the order the streets give them. It starts at Largo di Torre Argentina, where Julius Caesar was killed, then Piazza Navona, the most composed of the Roman squares and the most cosmopolitan, with outdoor cafés, seasonal fairs and Bernini's Four Rivers Fountain in the middle. A few streets on is San Luigi dei Francesi, which holds Caravaggio's cycle on the life of St Matthew. Three paintings, one chapel, and no admission charge. The Pantheon comes next: the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world and one of the best preserved Roman buildings anywhere. Then the Trevi Fountain for the coin, and finally Piazza di Spagna, with the Barcaccia at the foot of the steps and the staircase climbing to Trinità dei Monti. The streets off the square hold the flagship stores of the big fashion houses, which is a different kind of Roman history and one the guide will explain if you ask. One thing worth reading twice before booking: arrive fifteen minutes before departure. Latecomers who miss the tour are not refunded.
