Rome Highlights by Day or by Night, Two Opposite Routes
One booking, two walks that run in opposite directions and are not the same tour with the lights off. The day route starts in Piazza San Marco, crosses Piazza Venezia with the Vittoriano, Palazzo Venezia and the Palazzo delle Assicurazioni Generali, passes Trajan's Column, Market and Forum from the outside, then the Pontifical Gregorian University, the Trevi Fountain, the Galleria Sciarra, inside Sant'Ignazio di Loyola, the Pantheon, and ends in Piazza Navona. The night route runs the other way and goes further. It begins at Piazza Sant'Agostino, takes in Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Sant'Ignazio, the Galleria Sciarra and Vicus Caprarius, then the Trevi Fountain, the Gregorian University, Piazza Venezia, Palazzo Bonaparte, the Via dei Fori Imperiali and Caesar's Forum, and finishes at the Colosseum. Four stops the day walk does not have, including the underground site and the imperial forums lit after dark. Both include local snacks along the way and both go inside Sant'Ignazio, where the ceiling was painted flat to look like a dome and there is a marked spot on the floor where the trick works. Pick the route by what you want at the end: a square with cafes, or the Colosseum lit up.

Piazza di S. Marco, Roma
DAY WALK: meet your guide in Piazza San Marco, by the pine cone fountain. The guide will be holding a blue flag.
Piazza Venezia
The walk starts at Piazza Venezia, with the Vittoriano above it, built for the unification of Italy. The square has been the stage for a great deal of Italian public life, which makes it a useful place to begin.
From Piazza Venezia
Palazzo Venezia stands on the same square. It has been a papal residence and Mussolini's office, and it now holds the National Museum of Palazzo Venezia and its medieval and Renaissance collection.

Then the Palazzo delle Assicurazioni Generali, early 20th century, still the headquarters of one of Italy's largest insurance companies, and a good example of what Rome built when it wanted to look modern.
Colonna Traiana
Trajan's Column next, carved with the campaigns it commemorates, and beside it Trajan's Market, the commercial complex built into the hillside, whose brick tiers are still legible floor by floor.
Trevi Fountain
On to the Trevi Fountain, the sculpture up close and the coin thrown into the water, which by tradition brings you back.
Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola
Inside Sant'Ignazio di Loyola, for Andrea Pozzo's ceiling. The dome overhead is painted on a flat surface and only resolves from one marked point on the floor, which is why the church has picked up a second reputation online.
Pantheon
The Pantheon, the most completely preserved ancient building in Rome, with the dome and the open oculus at its centre. It has been a temple and a church, and Raphael is buried inside.

The day walk ends in Piazza Navona, with its three fountains: the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, the Fontana del Moro and the Fontana del Nettuno. There are cafes around the edge if you want to sit down.
