Trevi Fountain, Vicus Caprarius and Spanish Steps Walking Tour

A walk that starts below the street and ends in a courtyard nobody photographs. It opens underground at Vicus Caprarius, where Roman rooms sit around a working channel of the Aqua Virgo. The water still moves; the aqueduct was never switched off. From there the group comes up for the Trevi Fountain, and this is the point to read carefully: the fountain is seen from the viewpoint above, at street level, and the tour does not include going down to the basin. The guide covers the Baroque composition, the story of the spring and the coin ritual from up there. Then Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps, again from the square rather than climbing them, and the part they have played in Roman social life since the 18th century. The last stop is the one worth the price. The Galleria Sciarra is a covered courtyard a minute from the Trevi crowds, painted floor to ceiling with Art Nouveau frescoes, entered through an unmarked arch and almost always empty. Most visitors walk past the opening without turning their heads.

  1. Vicolo del Puttarello, 25, Roma

Please meet the guide in front of the entrance to Vicus Caprarius.

  2. Vicus Caprarius – the City of Water

The guide meets you in front of Vicus Caprarius, near the Trevi Fountain, and takes the group underground. Vicus Caprarius, the City of Water, holds Roman ruins and a still-working system connected to the Aqua Virgo. You walk through its chambers at the level the city stood on two thousand years ago.

  3. Trevi Fountain

Next the Trevi Fountain, with the history, the symbolism and the traditions explained from the viewpoint above the monument at street level. The fountain is seen from up there and the tour does not enter the basin area. What the guide covers is the Baroque design, the myth attached to the water source, and the coin thrown in to bring you back to Rome.

  4. Spanish Steps

On to Piazza di Spagna, one of the standing meeting points of the city. The steps and the square below, with their history and the part they played in Roman social life, seen from street level.

  5. Galleria Sciarra

Then into the Galleria Sciarra, a covered courtyard almost everyone walks past. The guide points out the frescoes and the Art Nouveau scheme covering all four walls, in a quiet corner a few steps off the busiest streets in Rome.

  6. Vicolo del Puttarello, 25, Roma
