Rome by Vintage Fiat 500, from Piazza del Popolo to the Pincio
An express tour of the centre in a vintage Fiat 500, which covers the ground without the walking and is a different way of seeing a city that was not built for cars. The route starts at Piazza del Popolo and reaches the Pantheon, then Piazza Navona and Piazza Venezia, along the Roman Forum to the Colosseum seen from outside, past the Circus Maximus, and on to the Trevi Fountain for the coin. It finishes on the Pincio, looking down over the Spanish Steps and the roofline behind them, which is the best free view in this part of Rome. The car is small, low and loud, and that is the point: you are in the traffic rather than above it, at the height of the scooters, close enough to the buildings to read the shopfronts. A coach gives you a window; this gives you the street. Suited to travellers with limited time who would rather see the centre properly in a short window than walk half of it slowly. The meeting point is Piazza del Popolo 11, in front of the Leonardo da Vinci Museum. Wait outside, do not go in: there is no company sign, the driver arrives with the car, and it is recognisable.

Piazza del Popolo, 11, Roma
The meeting point is Piazza del Popolo 11, in front of the Leonardo da Vinci Museum. Wait outside the entrance rather than going in. There is no company sign: the driver arrives with the vehicle and is easy to spot. Allow up to ten minutes of waiting.
Pantheon
The Pantheon is the piece of ancient engineering everyone else has been copying since. The dome and the oculus light the interior on their own, and the marble and the detail inside have come down largely intact. It began as a temple to all the gods and it has never fallen out of use.

Piazza Navona
Piazza Navona is among the finest Baroque squares in Rome, built on the stadium of Domitian. Three fountains stand in it, the great one being Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers, which is the seventeenth century at its most theatrical.
Piazza Venezia / Ancient City
A busy central square under the Altar of the Fatherland. It is the main crossroads of Rome, ringed by historic buildings, with views towards the Roman Forum and the Capitoline.
Roman Forum
The Roman Forum was the monumental centre of the ancient city, where Caesar, Augustus and Trajan each built temples and basilicas to advertise their own power.
Colosseum
The Colosseum, the amphitheatre built for gladiatorial games and public spectacles, with the Roman Forum beside it and its ruined temples and public halls.

Circo Massimo
The Circus Maximus was the largest chariot-racing arena in Rome, with room for up to 250,000 spectators by some estimates. It is now a long green valley, and the scale is easier to feel there than to read.
Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain is Baroque sculpture at full volume: Neptune's chariot, the figures around it and the water coming down over the rock. The sound is part of it, and so is the crowd throwing coins.
Spanish Steps
The Trinità dei Monti staircase seen from the top of the Pincio, which is an angle almost nobody photographs. The view opens over the roofs from there.
