Eight Sights of Rome in Four Hours, by Mercedes with a Driver-Guide
Four hours, eight sites, a new Mercedes and an English-speaking driver-guide. The operator is direct about the format and this page repeats it: the guide does not go inside the monuments. Each stop is for the history, the explanation and the photographs from outside. That is what makes eight sites possible in an afternoon rather than three. The route runs from the Circus Maximus, with the Palatine above it, through Piazza Venezia to the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, then across to St Peter's Square and up to the Janiculum terrace, ending at the Colosseum. The Janiculum is the stop that earns the vehicle. It is a climb most visitors never make on foot, and from the terrace you see the whole city laid out at once, which is the view that makes the map in your head finally work. At the Colosseum there is time to walk round it yourself after the explanation.
