Rome at Sunrise: the Pantheon Before the Crowds, with Breakfast
The whole point is the hour. Rome at sunrise is a different city: the squares are empty, the light is low and warm, and the photographs come out without a crowd in them. The route covers the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Venezia, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, in a group of six at most or privately if you prefer. Breakfast happens on the way, standing at a bar the way Romans take it, cappuccino and a cornetto, which in Italy is a perfectly respectable thing to eat first thing. Early has a practical argument as well as an aesthetic one. The Trevi Fountain at eight in the morning and the Trevi Fountain at noon are not comparable, and the difference is roughly the difference between seeing something and queuing near it. Note before booking: on the first Sunday of the month and on national holidays the tour does not include entry to the Pantheon. Those are free-admission days that the state does not let anyone reserve.

Spanish Steps
The early start is the point. You walk streets that are still quiet, and the Spanish Steps in the morning light are the version worth seeing, before the cobbles fill up.
Trevi Fountain
The group carries on to the Trevi Fountain, and the guide covers Nicola Salvi, the architect who designed it. Photographs do not convey the scale; standing in front of it does, and at this hour there is space to stand. The early hours are the difference between a picture of the fountain and a picture of other people's heads. Maintenance work is possible during your visit. Workers may be present, but the fountain stays visible.
Piazza Venezia
Then Piazza Venezia and the Altare della Patria, the enormous monument built between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to mark the unification of Italy.
Pantheon
The Pantheon in early light, at the hour when most visitors are asleep and Romans are having a coffee and a cornetto before work. It is the closest this square comes to being local. A pagan temple that became a Christian church, nearly two thousand years old and still holding services. Inside are the tombs of Raphael and of King Victor Emmanuel, among others. On the first Sunday of the month and on national holidays, Pantheon entry is not included.
Piazza Della Rotonda
Sweets for breakfast are entirely normal in Italy, and no Roman morning is complete without a stop at a bar for a cappuccino and a cornetto. There is a choice of fillings, and the coffee is what gets you through the rest of the day.
Piazza Navona
No walk through Rome is complete without Piazza Navona, one of the most visited squares in the city. Bernini's Four Rivers Fountain stands at the centre, with the shops, restaurants and bars that frame the piazza around it.
