Private Rome Walk with a Supplì and Fourteen Stops
Fourteen stops on a private walk that runs from the Pantheon to Tiber Island, taking in the parts of the old city that most itineraries skip. It starts at Sant'Ignazio, under the painted ceiling, then the Pantheon, then a supplì: the Roman fried rice ball with a core of melted cheese, eaten standing up, which is the correct way to be introduced to the food here. From Piazza Navona the route goes to the Campo de' Fiori market, then Largo Argentina, where four republican temples sit in an open excavation and where Julius Caesar was killed. Then the Jewish Ghetto and the Portico of Octavia, and a run of ancient buildings that survive because somebody kept using them: the Theatre of Marcellus, largest in Rome in the first century; the Temple of Portunus, raised to the god of harbours by the old river port; and the round temple beside it, the oldest marble building still standing in the city. The Mouth of Truth is on the way, with its legend, and then the Circus Maximus and the Palatine, where the empire was actually run. It ends by crossing to Tiber Island, which is shaped like a ship and was deliberately built up to look like one.
