Private Rome Walk from the Spanish Steps to Piazza Navona

A guide for your party alone, at a time you choose, walking the centre of Rome from one end of its story to the other. It starts in Piazza di Spagna, under the Spanish Steps, a square most people recognise from films before they ever stand in it, Roman Holiday among them. The guide covers how the square came to look the way it does. Part of that answer contradicts itself. The steps were paid for out of a French diplomat's bequest and they climb to Trinità dei Monti, a French church; the Spanish name is owed to the embassy Spain keeps to the Holy See, on the square since the seventeenth century. At the bottom is the Barcaccia, the sinking stone boat by Pietro Bernini, father of the more famous one. It sits low and dribbles rather than spouting because the water reaches this corner with almost no pressure, so the sculptor made a virtue of the fault. One rule to know before you arrive: sitting on the steps has been prohibited since 2019 and the fine is real. Wait standing, or wait by the fountain. If Florence belongs to the Renaissance, Rome belongs to the Baroque, and the walk goes on to the movement that shaped the city in the seventeenth century. The Trevi Fountain is the set piece: Nicola Salvi's design, and the fountain Anita Ekberg walked into in La Dolce Vita. The Trevi runs on the same water as the Barcaccia. The Acqua Vergine is the aqueduct Agrippa completed in 19 BC to supply his baths, it has never stopped running, and it is the reason there is a fountain at that particular corner at all. The thread ties the two ends of the walk together before you have reached the ancient part of it. Then further back, to the Pantheon, one of the best preserved buildings the Roman empire left, standing on the site Agrippa chose. The same man again, thirty years apart. The walk finishes in Piazza Navona, on the ground of a Roman games stadium, with the symbolism of the Fountain of the Four Rivers to close on. The four are the Nile, the Danube, the Ganges and the Río de la Plata, one for each continent then known, and the Nile has its head under a cloth because in 1651 nobody knew where its source was. The obelisk above them was cut for Domitian and carved with hieroglyphs in Rome rather than brought from a pharaoh's temple, and it was hauled here from the circus out on the Appian Way. Because it is private, the itinerary can be changed: say in the booking comments which areas or monuments you want, and the route is rearranged around them. Larger groups pay less per person. Those comments are the only channel there is, so a request made when you book will be accommodated and one made on the doorstep may not be. The price shown covers the party rather than each head, which is why the cost per person falls as the group grows, and which makes this an obvious choice for a family or four friends and an expensive one for someone travelling alone. Two hours suits the distance, roughly two kilometres of flat ground with four places to stop properly. What you are paying for is the questions: a private guide earns the money for anyone who wants to interrupt and pull at a thread, and is largely wasted on anyone who only wants to be walked past things in the right order.
