Private Rome Walk of Four Squares, with a Fiat 500 Option
Three hours on foot with a private guide, starting at your hotel, through the squares and fountains of the centre. The route takes in Piazza Navona and Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Pantheon, Via del Corso and Via Condotti, the Spanish Steps with the Barcaccia at the bottom of them, and the Trevi Fountain. What holds it together is the guide talking, and on a private booking the pace and the detail follow you rather than a script. Two of the stops repay knowing what you are looking at. The Barcaccia is shaped like a half-sunk boat, which is not a whim: it went up after the Tiber flood of 1598, and it has been running drinking water since the seventeenth century. And Michelangelo, standing in front of the Pantheon, is said to have called it angelic rather than human design. The tour can be upgraded to run by vintage Fiat 500, which changes the character of the afternoon considerably.

Piazza Navona
Piazza Navona, often called the finest square in Italy, holds three fountains, the famous one being Bernini's Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi. It is also among the liveliest squares in the city, ringed with outdoor restaurants and cafés.

Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona carries allegorical figures for four great rivers, one from each known continent. The design is Baroque at its most theatrical.
Pantheon
Then the Pantheon, the best preserved ancient temple in the world and the most remarkable thing the ancient world left standing. Michelangelo, seeing it for the first time, is said to have called it of angelic and not of human design.
Via Del Corso
Via del Corso runs straight through the historic centre from Piazza Venezia to Piazza del Popolo, lined with shops and busy at every hour.
Via Dei Condotti
Via Condotti is the luxury shopping street of Rome, running from the foot of the Spanish Steps, with the international fashion houses along it.

Fontana della Barcaccia
The Barcaccia sits at the foot of the Spanish Steps, shaped like a boat going under. Pietro Bernini and his son Gian Lorenzo are credited with it. It was built after the Tiber flood of 1598, and it has been giving drinking water to passers-by since the seventeenth century.
Trevi Fountain
The largest and best known fountain in Italy, and the one from La Dolce Vita. The guide covers what the sculpture is actually saying, which most visitors never find out.
