Private Rome Walk with an Archaeologist, Piazza di Spagna to Navona
The guide on this walk is an archaeologist, and that changes what you get. The historic centre of Rome is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is a way of saying that the palaces, the churches, the ruins, the statues and the fountains all sit on top of each other within a few hundred metres, and someone who reads buildings professionally can tell you which layer you are looking at. The route runs from Piazza di Spagna to Piazza Navona, and it deliberately includes the working city as well as the monuments: the column in Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Embassy, the Trevi Fountain, then through the Galleria Alberto Sordi into Piazza Colonna, where Palazzo Chigi houses the Italian government and the Column of Marcus Aurelius has stood since the second century. Montecitorio and the parliament are next door. Then Sant'Ignazio, a Baroque set piece where Filippo Raguzzini designed the square and Andrea Pozzo painted the ceiling, and the Pantheon on the way through. It ends at Piazza Navona, on the outline of Domitian's stadium, near Via Zanardelli.
