Pantheon tickets are booked in advance on this one, so the queue is somebody else's afternoon. What follows is a private walk with a licensed guide and no fixed clock: stay longer where it interests you, move on where it does not. The route runs downhill through time. It starts on the Capitoline, the smallest of the seven hills and the one that held the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, with a view over the Theatre of Marcellus, the Forum, and the Mamertine prison where Paul was held. Then down to Largo Argentina and the Curia of Pompey, where Caesar was killed, past the Forum of Caesar and Trajan's Column. After that the Baroque takes over: the Trevi Fountain, the Temple of Hadrian standing inside a later building in Piazza di Pietra, the Pantheon and its unsupported concrete dome, San Luigi dei Francesi with three Caravaggios on the life of St Matthew, and Piazza Navona to finish. Ancient, Renaissance, Catholic and Baroque Rome in one walk, which works here because all of it sits within about a kilometre.

  1. Piazza Navona, 14, Roma

Under the flag of the Brazilian Embassy building, in front of its main door. Your guide carries a sign reading Europe Odyssey.

  2. Piazza Venezia / Ancient City

From one of the best viewpoints in the city you look down on a theatre older than the Colosseum, the Theatre of Marcellus, along with the Mayor's offices, the Roman Forum and the Mamertine prison where Paul was held.

  3. Area Sacra di Largo Argentina

The Curia of Pompey, where Caesar was killed. Coming down the hill, the guide introduces the Forum of Julius Caesar, Trajan's Market and Trajan's Column.

  4. Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is the Baroque set piece of the walk. Cameras out, and the coin over the shoulder as tradition demands.

  5. Rome

The Temple of Hadrian, raised to the deified emperor on the Campus Martius by his adopted son and successor Antoninus Pius in 145, and now built into a later palace in Piazza di Pietra.

  6. Chiesa di Sant'Agnese in Agone

Sant'Agnese in Agone, the church on the west side of Piazza Navona, with its concave front and twin bell towers. It is dedicated to the martyr Agnes.

  7. Pantheon

The road brings you to the Pantheon, two thousand years old, with a free-standing concrete dome and nothing holding it up from below. It has been studied and copied for centuries.

  8. Church of St. Louis of the French

Between the Pantheon and Piazza Navona stands the French church in Rome, which holds three of Caravaggio's most famous paintings: the Calling of Saint Matthew, the Inspiration of Saint Matthew and the Martyrdom of Saint Matthew. The front carries sculptures and scenes from the history of France and its saints.

  9. Piazza Navona

The square with the Fountain of the Four Rivers in it, and about the clearest example of Roman Baroque anywhere.

  10. The Capitoline Hill

The Capitoline is the smallest of the seven hills of Rome and carried the most important sanctuary of the ancient city, the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus.

  11. Largo di Torre Argentina, Roma
