Rome After Dark, from Piazza di Pasquino to the Colosseum
The centre of Rome in August at two in the afternoon is a test of endurance. The same streets at nine in the evening are a different proposition, and this walk exists for that reason. It starts at Piazza di Pasquino, just outside Piazza Navona, and goes through the historic centre in a small group. Piazza Navona first, where the guide covers Domitian's stadium underneath the paving and the long professional hostility between Borromini and Bernini, who both left work on this square. Then past the Pantheon, Hadrian's second-century temple and the best preserved building in the city, and on to the Trevi Fountain, which is lit at night in a way that changes the sculpture completely. After that the route turns towards the ancient city: the Altar of the Fatherland, Trajan's Column and the imperial forums built by Caesar, Augustus and Trajan, all floodlit and all considerably emptier than they were six hours earlier. It ends outside the Colosseum, illuminated, with Monti and Piazza Venezia within walking distance if the evening has further to run.
