Rome Highlights Walk from Piazza d'Aracoeli to Piazza Navona
An express walk for people who have a few hours rather than a few days, and want the centre to make sense afterwards. It starts at Piazza d'Aracoeli, a few steps from the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, which is a practical place to begin: you can carry on to either of them when the walk ends. The route goes past the Altar of the Fatherland and Trajan's Column, whose spiral relief is a continuous record of a war carved in stone, then through the old centre to the Trevi Fountain for the coin. Two stops on the way in are not on the standard list. Galleria Sciarra is a nineteenth-century courtyard frescoed floor to ceiling and free to walk into, and Sant'Ignazio is a Baroque church worth the detour for the ceiling alone. The Pantheon is seen from the square: this walk admires the exterior rather than going inside, which is worth knowing before you book. It finishes at Piazza Navona around dinner time, among the restaurants, which is deliberate. Arrive ten minutes early. Latecomers are not refunded.
