Four hours, a small group, a minivan and a driver who collects you from your hotel and returns you there afterwards. The pick-up is the practical argument. Rome's monuments are not arranged for walking between: the Colosseum and St Peter's are three kilometres apart with the whole centre in between, and doing that on foot in an afternoon leaves no time to look at anything. By vehicle it is a half day with stops. The route takes in the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, the Capitoline, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, Castel Sant'Angelo and St Peter's Square. The itinerary and the length of each stop can shift depending on traffic, closures and the day, which is honest of the operator to say and worth knowing: this is a tour of the major sights rather than a fixed timetable.
