Rome in a Day by Car, with the Catacombs and the Appian Way
Rome has more famous sights than one day can hold on foot, and this tour solves that with a car and a route that includes something most one-day itineraries leave out: the catacombs and the Appian Way. The morning covers the ancient city and the centre: the Colosseum, the Circus Maximus with the Palatine above it, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona and Piazza Venezia. The afternoon goes out of the centre. The Catacombs of San Callisto are a network of Christian burial galleries begun in the second century, cut into soft rock and running for kilometres, lined with empty niches and painted with some of the earliest Christian imagery anywhere. Then the Via Appia Antica, the oldest of the Roman roads, with long stretches of the original basalt paving still in place: the road Spartacus and six thousand of his followers were crucified along, and where Peter is said to have turned back towards Rome in AD 64. Two notes on the practicalities. Colosseum tickets can be booked on request at 50 euro per person, or 5 euro for under-17s. And the catacombs are led by their own guides, so that part is done in a larger group.

Colosseum
The Roman empire through the buildings that outlasted it, and the city of the Caesars under the city of the popes. Roman influence still shows in western government, engineering, architecture, language and literature, and the tour starts where that is most obvious. Note: Colosseum tickets can be booked on request at an extra 50 euro per person, or 5 euro for children under 17.

Circo Massimo
On to the Circus Maximus, the enormous stadium that held chariot racing and public spectacle. The Palatine above it carries the legend of the city's founding and the imperial palace built by Augustus, adopted son of Julius Caesar.
Pantheon
Then the Pantheon, the ancient Roman building known above all for its concrete dome. The first one on the site was begun in 27 BC by the statesman Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa.

Trevi Fountain
Then the largest and most theatrical fountain in Rome, which millions of people visit each year to throw in a coin.
Spanish Steps
One of the places everyone goes, and a good example of Roman Baroque. Also somewhere to sit down for ten minutes and watch the city.
Piazza Navona
A walk through Piazza Navona, with its three fountains, including Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers at the centre.
Piazza Venezia / Ancient City
Piazza Venezia, along the road that runs through the Roman Forum. Two things to look at here: the monument Romans call the wedding cake, and the balcony Mussolini used.
Catacombe di San Callisto
A visit to the catacombs, a maze of underground Christian cemeteries begun in the second century. You walk tunnels lined with empty burial niches and painted with early Christian frescoes. Note: the catacomb visit is led by the catacombs' own guides, and you join a larger group for that part.

Appian Way (Via Appia Antica)
The Via Appia Antica is the oldest of the Roman roads. Spartacus and six thousand of his followers were crucified along it, and it is where St Peter is said to have had his vision of Christ as he was leaving Rome in AD 64. Long stretches of the original paving are still in place.
