Rome by Night in a Classic Mini Cabrio, Twenty Stops
Twenty stops in one evening, in a classic Mini Cooper with the roof down. The car is the point. With the top open the monuments pass overhead rather than through a windscreen, and the route can take in the hills, which on foot would be a separate night's work. It starts and ends wherever you want. Between those it covers St Peter's Square, the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Roman Forum, the Palatine and the Circus Maximus, then climbs to the Janiculum and the Aventine for the two best views of the lit city. There are stops most drivers skip. The Pyramid of Cestius, built between 18 and 12 BC as the tomb of a Roman magistrate who wanted an Egyptian burial. Monte Testaccio, an artificial hill made entirely of broken amphorae tipped there over centuries. The Aventine keyhole. The Baths of Caracalla. Trastevere and the Jewish quarter, home to the oldest Jewish community in Europe. A welcome gift, hats, drinks and snacks are included, along with a stop for a drink at a bar where the clientele is Roman. The Colosseum stop is about ten minutes, long enough for photographs. All sales are final.
