Two hours, a private Mercedes and an English-speaking driver, covering ground that would take a full evening on foot. One thing stated plainly by the operator and worth repeating: the drivers are not licensed guides. In Italy that is a legal distinction, not a modesty. They know the city, they have been doing this for years and they will answer your questions, but this is a night drive with commentary rather than a guided tour, and the price reflects that. If you want an art historian, book a walking tour instead. What the car buys you is reach. Circus Maximus, the Palatine, the Campidoglio with the Forum lit below it, the Vittoriano, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, Castel Sant'Angelo, St Peter's Square, and the Janiculum at the end, which is the highest of the stops and the one nobody walks to at night. Between them the traffic has thinned, the monuments are floodlit and there is nowhere to park, which is precisely the argument for having a driver. The route can be adjusted to what you want to see.

  1. Circo Massimo

    The Circus Maximus, the largest arena ancient Rome built, made for chariot racing over seven laps. Many of the drivers were slaves, and what they were racing for was not the prize money but their freedom.

  2. Palatine Hill

    The Palatine, one of the seven hills and among the oldest inhabited parts of the city, standing above the Forum on one side and the Circus Maximus on the other.

    The Campidoglio after dark, and the view from behind it down over the lit Forum, which is one of the few places the ancient city reads as a plan rather than as rubble.

  4. Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II

    Driving along the Altare della Patria in Piazza Venezia. The monument was inaugurated in 1911 for Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a united Italy.

  5. Pantheon

    The Pantheon in Piazza della Rotonda, with the portico lit from below and the square emptier than it has been all day.

  9. Colle del Gianicolo

    The Janiculum last, above everything, with the city laid out below and the driver on hand for questions about what you are looking at.
