The walk continues into the historic centre and Largo di Torre Argentina, where four Roman temples stand below street level and Julius Caesar was killed. Cats have run the site for decades. From there the route threads through side streets lined with churches, palaces and fountains that draw no queues, and finishes at the Pantheon: founded by Agrippa in 27 BC, rebuilt later under Hadrian, and turned into a church in the seventh century, which is the reason so much of it is still standing.

Inside the Pantheon the pace is yours. The unreinforced dome overhead, and the oculus at its centre, open to the sky as it always has been. Walk the rotunda and look at what is underfoot as well as above: marble floors, Corinthian columns, and the classical detail worked into both. Stop at the tombs of Raphael and King Victor Emmanuel II. The room is quiet in a way that a space this size has no business being. Stay as long as you like. Nothing after this is timed.
