Night Photography Workshop: Manual Mode, Castel to Colosseum
This is a class that happens to move through Rome, rather than a walk with photo stops. What gets taught: long exposures, and how to balance the artificial light on a monument against whatever is left in the sky. Manual mode, which for most people is the barrier, covering ISO, white balance, aperture and shutter speed and what each one costs you. Composition, using leading lines, symmetry, foreground and layers, which is what separates a photograph of the Pantheon from every other photograph of the Pantheon. And coaching while you shoot, which is the part that actually changes how you work. iPhone users are welcome, and the principles transfer. The route runs from Castel Sant'Angelo, where the arches and the castle reflect in the Tiber, to St Peter's Square, then Via dei Coronari, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Campidoglio, a viewpoint over the Forum, and the Colosseum at the end, at an hour when nobody is standing in the frame. Groups are kept small on purpose, and there is an optional review afterwards: send your images in and get a proper critique.

Ponte Sant'Angelo, Roma
Come to the entrance of Castel Sant'Angelo, directly opposite the bridge of angels.
This is our meeting point
The meeting point, at the papal fortress facing the bridge of angels, where the arches and the castle come back off the water with the lights doubled.
St. Peter's Square
Bernini's square in the Vatican City, shooting the colonnade, the fountain and St Peter's itself.

One of the most elegant back streets in Rome, full of corners and small details that hold the older character of the city.

Piazza Navona
The square sits on Domitian's stadium, which is why it is that shape. Three fountains, Bernini's Four Rivers at the centre, and enough architecture around the edge to make it the best teaching stop of the evening.

Pantheon
Facing the small Piazza della Rotonda, the best preserved Roman temple in the city: a Greek-style portico set against a Roman rotunda, which is worth several angles on its own. The fountain in the square has dolphins, sea monsters and masks, and they photograph well too.

Piazza del Campidoglio
Michelangelo's square, with its symmetry, the equestrian Marcus Aurelius at the centre and three facades around it. A set built for photographs three centuries before the camera.

A viewpoint over the Roman Forum: columns, temple fronts and the Colosseum at the far end of the view.

Colosseum
The walk ends at the most visited archaeological site in the world, at an hour when almost nobody is in the way. The Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine, without the crowd.
