Jewish Ghetto & Piazza Navona: Food, Wine & Sightseeing Rome Tour

Four hours in the evening through two of the oldest quarters in Rome, Campo Marzio and the Jewish Ghetto, eating as you go. The Ghetto is the reason to take this walk rather than another food tour. Jews have lived in this handful of streets since before the Christian era, and the cooking that developed here is its own tradition rather than a variant of Roman food. The trattorias are family-run and most of them are on streets you would not turn down without being told to. The tastings run from cured meats, fish and vegetables through pizza and pasta to dessert, with local wines alongside. The dinner is the set piece: it is served among the ruins of an ancient theatre, which is not a decorative claim but the actual foundation of the building. Between courses the route takes in the Portico of Octavia, the Theatre of Marcellus, the Temple of Apollo, Campo de' Fiori, Piazza Navona, the church of Sant'Eustachio, the Italian Senate and the Theatre of Pompey, where Julius Caesar was killed. The Synagogue is seen from outside only. Meet at the turtle fountain in Piazza Mattei, fifteen minutes early. The tour leaves at 5.30pm exactly.
