It Starts on an Island: Trastevere Street Food in 2.5 Hours
The meeting point is a small square on an island in the middle of the Tiber, which is a better place to begin than a piazza full of people looking for their guide. Tiber Island sits between the two bends of the river, the only island inside the city. Rome put a temple to the god of medicine here after a plague, and the site has been used for healing ever since: the hospital on it is still working, still taking patients, on ground that has been doing the same job for over two thousand years. From there the walk crosses to the far bank and into Trastevere, two and a half hours at a steady pace through the alleys rather than the main streets. Pizza from one of the oldest bakeries in the quarter, the crisp Roman kind. Pastries, cheese, salami, and tastings at delis along the way. Piazza in Piscinula, then Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, the old centre of the quarter. The basilica is seen from outside on this tour. It ends at Piazza Trilussa, on the steps by the fountain, with artisanal gelato. Meet at the statue of Saint Bartholomew in the middle of the square.
