Castel Sant'Angelo, with the Passetto di Borgo on Weekends
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
RomeOne listing with several ways in, and the difference between them is worth reading before you pick. The standard option is a small group, capped at fifteen, with a licensed English-speaking guide. There is also an audio guide app if you would rather set your own pace, and a private upgrade that adds the surrounding city: Piazza del Popolo, St Peter's Square, Santa Maria del Popolo, Santa Maria della Vittoria and the Pantheon from outside. The version that matters is the private Friday or Saturday one, because it includes the Passetto di Borgo. The Passetto is an 800-metre walled corridor running along the top of a wall from the Vatican to the castle, built so that a pope under threat could get out of the palace without touching the street. Clement VII used it in 1527 while the imperial troops were sacking the city below, and it worked. It is not open every day and it is not part of the ordinary ticket, which is why the day you book decides whether you walk it. The castle is closed on Mondays, whichever option you choose.
