Castel Sant'Angelo Fast-Track: One Route, Bottom to Top

Fast-track entry and then the building on your own, which in this case means something more specific than it usually does. Castel Sant'Angelo is not a museum you wander. The architecture sets the order and you follow it: in at the base of the Roman drum, up the spiral ramp that Hadrian's engineers cut through the solid mass, out into the courtyards, through the papal apartments on the upper floors, and finally onto the Angel's Terrace at the top. Two thousand years of building history arrive in chronological order because that is the order they were stacked in. What changes with a self-guided ticket is the time you spend at each level, not the sequence. Nobody moves you on from the ramp, and nobody hurries you off the terrace, which is where the argument for skipping the guide sits. From the top the view is unobstructed in every direction, with St Peter's on one side and the bend of the Tiber below. All sales are final: cancellations are not refunded.
