Castel Sant'Angelo Privately: The Cell Behind the Trapdoor

Up is the part everyone books for: the papal rooms with their gilded stucco and polished marble floors, the frescoes by Perin del Vaga, and the terrace at the summit with one of the best views in the city. The castle had prisons, and the worst of them was fitted into a ventilation shaft above Hadrian's spiral ramp: a small room reachable only through a trapdoor in the ceiling. Another opening in the floor was used to dispose of bodies. Those two details, a few metres from the decorated apartments, are the honest description of what this building was for.
