A semi-private group capped at fifteen, walking the twenty rooms of the villa with the dates and the commissions attached to each piece rather than a general sweep. What the Borghese holds is an unusual concentration: a large share of Bernini's secular sculpture is in this one building, from the early Amalthea group made when he was still a teenager to the Rape of Proserpina and Apollo and Daphne, the works that decided what Baroque sculpture would look like for the next century. The route also covers Canova's Pauline Bonaparte, the two portrait busts Bernini cut of Cardinal Scipione, and Truth Unveiled by Time, which he made for himself and never finished as planned. The paintings are here too: Caravaggio's Young Sick Bacchus and the Boy with a Basket of Fruit among them, and Raphael. Skip-the-line entry, so the slot starts when it should. Arrive at least fifteen minutes before the departure time.

  2. Apollo and Daphne – a marble sculpture in the Baroque style…

Apollo and Daphne, life-size Baroque marble by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, carved between 1622 and 1625. It takes the climax of the story as Ovid tells it in the Metamorphoses, the moment the pursued woman turns into a tree.

  3. Galleria Borghese

Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix, the semi-nude life-size neoclassical portrait by Antonio Canova. Her husband Camillo Borghese commissioned it after their marriage, and it was carved in Rome between 1805 and 1808. It went to Camillo's house in Turin, then to Genoa, and only reached the Galleria Borghese around 1838.

  4. Galleria Borghese

Two marble portrait busts of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, both by Bernini, both from 1632, and both in the gallery.

  5. Galleria Borghese

Truth Unveiled by Time, marble by Bernini, carved between 1646 and 1652. The plan was an allegory: Truth as a naked young woman being uncovered by a figure of Time above her. The figure of Time was never carved, and the work stands as the half of the idea he finished.

  6. Galleria Borghese

David, life-size marble by Bernini, commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese for this gallery and finished in seven months between 1623 and 1624. The subject is the instant before the stone leaves the sling.
