Three ways to book: a semi-private group capped at six, a small group capped at fifteen, or the ticket alone. Inside, the ground floor is Bernini. Apollo and Daphne, the David, the Rape of Proserpina, and Canova's Pauline Bonaparte, all carved to be walked around. Upstairs the paintings: Caravaggio's David with the Head of Goliath and his Saint Jerome, Raphael's Lady with a Unicorn, Titian's Sacred and Profane Love, Correggio's Danaë. The useful part of this listing is what it tells you to do next, because the slot is two hours and the park outside is enormous. Leaving the gallery, Viale dei Pupazzi runs to the Temple of Aesculapius, a folly on an artificial lake under umbrella pines, where you can rent a rowing boat by the half hour. From there the signs point to the Pincio terrace, above Piazza del Popolo, which is the view most people photograph without knowing its name. Below the terrace, Casina Valadier is a café with a panoramic terrace, good for a coffee or a plate at lunchtime. The park also holds a Globe Theatre and the Cinema dei Piccoli, the smallest cinema in the world. Or walk down to Piazza del Popolo and rejoin the city.

  1. Rome

Plan to arrive at the meeting point at least 15 minutes early. Meet our representative in the square in front of the entrance to the Borghese Gallery, at Piazzale del Museo Borghese, 00197 Rome. Look for a flag with the EcoArt logo.

  2. Galleria Borghese

The ground floor first, and Baroque sculpture: Bernini's Apollo and Daphne, David and the Rape of Proserpina, and Canova's Pauline Bonaparte. Marble made to hold movement and the moment before something goes wrong.

  3. Borghese Gallery

Then upstairs to the paintings. Caravaggio's realism, in the David with the Head of Goliath and the Saint Jerome. Raphael's Lady with a Unicorn, Titian's Sacred and Profane Love, and Correggio's Danaë.

  4. Villa Borghese

After the tour, the Borghese Gardens are yours. From the gallery, Viale dei Pupazzi leads to the Temple of Aesculapius on its lake, ringed by umbrella pines and statues, where rowing boats can be hired. Then follow the signs to the Pincio terrace, one of the best viewpoints in Rome, looking down over Piazza del Popolo and across the roofs.

  5. Villa Borghese Gardens

The shaded path leads down to Casina Valadier, a historic café with panoramic terraces, good for a coffee, an aperitivo or a light lunch. From there you can keep exploring the park, including the Globe Theatre and the Cinema dei Piccoli, or walk down towards Piazza del Popolo and back into the city.
