Pantheon Ticket with Piazza della Rotonda and the Minerva Elephant
Three stops, and the Pantheon is only the middle one. It starts outside, in Piazza della Rotonda, with the portico in front of you: granite columns, the bronze doors, and proportions that have been copied for five hundred years. The fountain in the square carries an Egyptian obelisk on top, and the audio guide fills in how a Roman space turned into the café-lined square it is now. Inside, with rapid entry, the subjects are the dome, the oculus, the geometry that makes the room feel taller than it measures, the tombs of Raphael and the Italian kings, and the change from pagan temple to church. The last stop is a minute away and most visitors never make it. Piazza della Minerva holds Bernini's small marble elephant with an obelisk on its back, and behind it stands Santa Maria sopra Minerva, the only Gothic church in Rome. It is free to enter and it is usually quiet, which after the crowd under the dome is the whole point.

Fontana del Pantheon
The first stop is Piazza della Rotonda, the square that frames the front of the Pantheon. The commentary covers the portico with its ancient granite columns, the original bronze doors, and the proportions that artists have measured themselves against for centuries. It also takes in the Fountain of the Pantheon with its Egyptian obelisk, and how the square went from Roman ground to the public space it is now, cafés and street life included. Along the way come the details most visitors walk straight past: the marks on the columns, the symbols, and the odd stories attached to the buildings around the edge.

Inside Rome's best preserved ancient temple, the things to look for are the dome, the open oculus and the geometry that ties the two together, plus the tombs of Raphael and the Italian kings.
