A host meets you at the stated point and deals with the ticket collection, which is the part of a Pantheon visit most likely to go wrong. From there you go in, and the mobile app takes over. The dome is what everyone comes for. It is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built, and the oculus at its centre is an open circle to the sky that lights the whole interior with nothing else needed. The app covers the change from a Roman temple dedicated to all the gods into a Christian basilica, and the proportions architects have been copying ever since. It is worth knowing what is missing, too. The portico ceiling was sheathed in bronze until Urban VIII had it taken down: 152.7 tonnes of metal, more than nine tenths of which went to the cannon foundry at Castel Sant'Angelo. The bare beams overhead are what that decision left behind. The marble floor repays a slow circuit, and nothing about the visit is timed.

  3. Pantheon

The dome is the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world and has been for two thousand years. Standing under the oculus at its centre, you see how the daylight falls into the room and why the Romans put a hole there rather than a window. The commentary explains how the span was achieved, which is a question of engineering rather than of magic.

  4. Piazza Della Rotonda
