Pantheon Reserved Entry and Audio, Ticket Handed Over at Piazza della Minerva
The ticket is bought for you and sent to your email or your WhatsApp number, so the long queue at the ticket window is somebody else's afternoon. Collection is at Piazza della Minerva, and you should arrive ten minutes before your chosen time. Reserved entry buys time inside rather than time outside. The Pantheon came through the centuries of quarrying that took apart most of imperial Rome, and the visit is more interesting once you know why: it was consecrated as a church, and churches were maintained while temples were not. The dome measures 43 metres across and its geometry does something no photograph carries. A single shaft of daylight comes through the oculus and crosses the interior as the sun moves. At Pentecost, red rose petals fall through that same opening onto the crowd below; the next two fall on 16 May 2027 and 4 June 2028. Around the walls are the tombs, and the list is a strange one: an artist, two kings and a composer, each of whom wanted to be here for entirely different reasons.

Fontana del Pantheon
The fountain stands directly in front of what Stendhal called the most beautiful remains of Roman antiquity. Leonardo Sormani carved it to a 1575 design by the architect Giacomo Della Porta (1533-1602), and it was among the first fountains raised in Renaissance Rome. It went up after the Virgo aqueduct was restored in 1570, the same repair that later fed the Barcaccia, the Trevi Fountain and the Fountain of the Four Rivers.
Pantheon
Through the doors the room opens all at once: one circle under one dome, with the oculus at its centre letting in the only daylight the building has. The Romans built it in unreinforced concrete and nobody has matched the span since. Take it slowly. The marble on the floor and the columns along the wall are worth as much time as the ceiling, and this ancient temple is a working church, which is why there are altars between the niches where the gods used to stand. The tombs are set into that wall. Raphael is here, in a grave he bought and paid for rather than one granted to him as an honour.
