The audio guide comes in six languages and needs no app. The link arrives by WhatsApp or email together with the entry ticket, so there is nothing to download at the door and nothing to collect from a desk. Entry is timed, which keeps you out of the worst of the crowd, and the visit itself is independent: no group, no guide, no schedule to keep once you are inside. You go in through bronze doors 4.45 metres wide and 7.53 metres tall that have been hung on the same threshold for nearly two thousand years. Beyond them the dome is the largest in unreinforced concrete anywhere, with the oculus open at its centre. Sunlight comes down through it in a single shaft and moves across the marble all day. Rain comes down too, which the builders planned for rather than fought. The commentary covers the change from Roman temple to Christian church, the proportions that make the room feel the way it does, and the tomb of Raphael along with the other burials. One condition to weigh before booking: this ticket is not refundable under any circumstances.

  2. Pantheon

The entrance comes first: bronze doors nearly two thousand years old, and a portico of granite columns you walk between to reach them. Then the dome. It is the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world and has held that record since it was built, with the oculus open at its centre, an eye to the sky that lights the whole room and lets the weather in. Sunlight moves across the marble floor through the day. So does rain, which the design accounts for rather than resists. Raphael's tomb is set into the wall, alongside other figures from Italian history, and the audio guide fills in the rest: how a pagan temple became a Christian church, the mathematics behind proportions that feel right before you can say why, and the legends that have attached themselves to the place. Silence is part of it. The room is large enough that a crowd sounds distant.
