Opera and Dinner in the Innocent X Hall, Over Piazza Navona
Innocent X built the palace on Piazza Navona for his family, and then commissioned Bernini to put the Fountain of the Four Rivers in the square in front of it. The two were one project. The hall this dinner is held in carries his name, and its windows look down on the fountain he paid for. Dinner is by candlelight, at a reserved seat, with Italian cooking and a selection of fine wines. The music is live and it is not background: arias and duets are performed before the meal and continue between the courses, with something else at the end that the organisers do not announce in advance. Numbers are limited, and the evening only runs on set dates. Hearing an aria in a 17th-century hall, from a seat above the square that the same family commissioned, is a specific thing rather than a general one, and it is not available anywhere else in Rome.
