The same centre, four hours later. After dark the coaches have gone, the traffic on the Lungotevere has thinned and the monuments are lit from the ground up, which is not how they were designed to be seen but is what makes them photograph. The walk runs from Piazza Navona to the Forum, moving from the Baroque city into the imperial one, and the two are twenty minutes apart on foot. Along the way: the Fountain of the Four Rivers and Sant'Agnese in Agone, and the story of the two men who built them and could not stand each other. The Pantheon from the outside, a building put up three times and destroyed twice before the version standing now. The Trevi Fountain by Nicola Salvi, with fewer people around it and the sound of the water audible, which during the day it is not. Piazza Venezia and Sacconi's Vittoriano lit white. Trajan's Column, and the Forum at the end. The host is Lascarina, who runs the walk herself and is more interested in how people actually lived than in dates.

  1. Piazza Navona, 90, Roma

We will meet at the Fountain of the Moor on the southern side of Piazza Navona. Your host in Rome, Rina, will be waiting for you holding a writing sign with the company name.

  2. Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona to start, with the Baroque Fountain of the Four Rivers and the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone behind it, and the legends about the two Baroque architects who worked here at the same time.

  3. Pantheon

A few minutes in front of the Pantheon, the best preserved ancient building in the world and still in use. It was built three times and destroyed twice: what stands now is the third attempt.

  4. Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain, designed by Nicola Salvi and filmed more than any other fountain in Europe, La Dolce Vita included. At night you can hear the water, which by day is drowned out.

  5. Piazza Venezia

Piazza Venezia before the imperial city begins, and the modern history that happened on it. The Altare della Patria, the Vittoriano, designed by Giuseppe Sacconi for the unification of Italy, is lit at night and hard to look away from.

  6. Colonna Traiana

Trajan's Column at the edge of the imperial forums, with the stories that go back to the founding of the city.

  7. Roman Forum

The Forum after dark, lit and empty, with the crowds of the daytime gone. The history runs from the founding through the three periods that matter, and the part that sticks is usually the scandals: how the people whose names are on these buildings actually behaved.

  8. P.za del Colosseo, 1, Roma
